File Storage and Management
  • Files and Folders

6
Removable Discs
  • Removable discs have three important uses
  • Copying/moving files transferring and moving
    files between machines.
  • Backing-up files To ensure that there is a
duplicate copy in case files are accidentally
    corrupted or deleted.
  • Archiving files Files that are not being used
can be removed from the hard drive to free up
    valuable storage space.

7
Removable Discs
  • Types of Discs
  • Zip disc similar to floppy disc but with much
    greater storage. 100MB
  • CD-R Optical medium, storage capacity 650MB
  • DVD similar to CD, storage capacity 4.7GB
  • Memory Stick/Pen Drive more compact, more
    reliable. Storage 128MB,32GB

8
3D CAD Modelling (Advantages)
  • Can be produced more quickly
  • Can be modified more quickly
  • Enables the designer to try texture and colour on
    the model

9
3D CAD Modelling (Advantages)
  • Can be used to test designs before they are
    finished.
  • Can be realistically rendered

10
3D CAD Modelling (Advantages)
  • Can be sent easily to remote locations
  • Take up less storage space than built models
  • Can be used to create realistic simulations

11
CAD Modelling (Types)
  • Wireframe Model The object is built up using a
    series of connected lines.
  • Surface Model The object is built up by drawing
    the surfaces of an object.
  • Solid model Built up using simple geometric
shapes such as cones, cylinders etc. these can be
added or subtracted to produce more complex
    models.
  • Surface rendered The object is rendered with a
solid looking surface. Colours, shading and
textures can be added to produce realistic
    looking images.

12
Simulation and Animation
  • Animation is moving but it is not interactive.
  • Roller coaster animation.
  • Simulation the user can interact with the
    programme, e.g. flight simulator.
  • Flight simulator
