Poetry
  • 9 Honors English

2
What is Poetry??
  • Poetry captures images and impressions of life
and experiences through the use of well-chosen
words and phrases. Though it is not written
using traditional sentences and paragraphs, it is
not random. It has its own set of features and
    rules.

3
We need to look for
4
Tone
  • The authors, or speakers attitude- stated or
unstated- toward a subject or audience.

5
Imagery
  • The use of language to represent experiences of
the senses- seen, touched, heard, tasted and
    smelled

6
Sound
  • Poetry is meant to be both read and heard.
  • Rhythm
  • Rhyme
  • Slant Rhyme
  • Instead of perfect or identical sounds or rhyme,
it is the repetition of near or similar sounds or
the pairing of accented and unaccented sounds
that if both were accented would be perfect
rhymes (stopped and wept, parable and shell).
  • Alliteration
  • Onomatopoeia

7
Figurative Language
  • The opposite of literal language
  • It is NOT meant to be understood exactly as it
    appears
  • Similes
  • Metaphors
  • Personification
  • Hyperbole
  • Allusions
  • Irony
  • Symbolism

8
Two ways of making a comparison
  • Metaphors and Similes

9
Personification
  • Giving human traits or characteristics to
    non-humans

The bells sang. The banana begged to be eaten.
10
Hyperbole
  • Vast exaggeration of the truth to make a point.

11
  • Allusion-
  • a reference in a literary work to a person,
place, or thing in history or another work of
literature. Allusions are often indirect or brief
references to well-known characters or events.
  • Irony
  • a literary term referring to how a person,
situation, statement, or circumstance is not as
it would actually seem. Many times it is the
exact opposite of what it appears to be.

12
Symbolism
  • Symbol is a word or object that stands for
another word or object. The object or word can be
seen with the eye or not visible.
