Art Masterpiece Egyptian Art Cartouche Today in
Art Masterpiece our fifth grade students
discussed Egyptian art and symbolism and each
made their own cartouche. The term cartouche
is a relatively modern one coined by the French
soldiers of Napoleons expedition in Egypt, who
saw in the sign the likeness of the cartridges or
cartouche shape used in their own guns. The
students etched the Egyptian spelling of their
names and other symbols on gold scratch board
giving them meaning of royalty like that of the
Egyptian Kings and Queens.
