- What is Communication?
- The process of sending and receiving messages.
- Communication is like playing catch
2The Communication Process
- The sender encodes and transmits the message
through a given channel (the way a message is
sent). - A message is words, body language and symbols
that communicate thoughts or ideas. - The receiver intercepts and decodes the message
and then transmits feedback - Feedback is words, body language and symbols that
respond to the senders message.

4Communication Barriers
- Any obstacle that gets in communication barrier.
There are five communication barriers - Social they arent part of my group (these are
social, economical, peer or professional groups). - Cultural we dont have the same background,
religion, family type, or speak the same
language - Educational I am too smart for them or they are
too smart for me (either perceived or real
differences) - Environmental there is something physical
blocking communication from happening - Attitudinal somebody doesnt like the topic or
person who is speaking (bad attitude)
55 Levels of Communication
- Intrapersonal communication within yourself
- Interpersonal communication with you and one
other person (You 1) - Small Group at least 3-7 people
- Public classroom or assembly size audience
- Mass global communication (radio, tv, worldwide
web, etc.)
6Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
Physiological needs Are daily needs which are
most important. This need must be met before any
other need. Next safety so on so on up there
pyramid. Safety needs Seat belts, insurance,
alarms (car house) etc Belongingness Needing
to be liked or loved. Self-Esteem Esteem high
confidence in yourself both physically
mentally. Example Do I like my appearance/my
health. Do I like the knowledge Ive
gained. Self-Actualization Is the ultimate goal.
Be all you can be Reaching your full potential
Definition of needs A need is something that is
necessary for organisms to live a
healthy life. Beginning from bottom to top
explain the importance of these needs in their
daily life.

- We rely on non-verbal communication more than we
do verbal because 85 of communication is
non-verbal - Symbol anything that stands or represents
something else - Integrity is simply doing the right thing when
no one else is looking - Ethics knowing the difference between right and
wrong
