What are the Art ELEMENTS?

• Art elements are the building blocks of all
  visual arts, they are.
• Color
• Value
• Texture
• Space
• Shape
• Form

SHAPE

• Shapes can be geometric or organic
• Geometric shapes have perfect edges like circles,
  rectangles and squares.
• Organic shapes are more lifelike, like trees,
  leaves and people.
• Shapes are FLAT

Forms

• Forms are 3 dimensional. In art we talk about the
  4 basic forms.
• Cone
• Cylinder
• Cube
• Sphere
• Many complex forms like the human body can be
  simplified into these basic forms

Value

• Value is lightness or darkness in a drawing or
  painting.
• To create value in a drawing we may use shading
  techniques.
• To create value in a painting we will mix colors
  creating tints and shades
• CONTRAST is the difference between light and dark
  values in a design.

Color

• Not all ART has color , but color is an essential
  element in many art media , especially painting.
• Colors are arranged according to the color wheel.
  
• Primary , Secondary and Intermediate colors. (

Texture

• Texture is the art element that describes the
  surface feeling of an object. It may be rough,
  smooth or furry.. Texture in most 2D art work is
  IMPLIED. In other words it looks like fur or
  bricks. In 3D work like clay or sculpture the
  artist can create real textures on the surface of
  their work.

SPACE

• Space is the SPACE of the picture plane that you
  are working in, for a drawing or painting it is
  the space of the page or canvas.
• SPACE can be broken down into to areas. POSIVE
  SPACE is the space of the objects in a drawing,
  NEGATIVE SPACE is the background space.
