Chapter 1 Design ProcessIntroduction
  • Design Defined
  • What words come to mind when you hear the word
    design?
  • A design (noun) a planned arrangement of visual
elements to construct an organized visual pattern
  • To design (verb) to plan, to organize, the
    opposite of chance
  • When we say "it happened by design" we mean
something was planned and did not occur by
    accident!

5
Chapter 1 Design ProcessProcedures
  • In art, as in communication, the artist or
designer is saying something to the viewer.
  • A successful solution not only is visually
effective but also communicates an idea.
  • Any of the elements of art can be used in
    communication.
  • "a picture IS worth a thousand words!"

6
How do you get ideas?
  • Thinking Looking Doing

7
ThinkingGetting started
  • When confronted by a problem in any aspect of
life, the usual first step is to think about it.
  • Knowing what you are doing must precede your
doing it-so thinking starts with understanding
    the problem.

8
Thinking Form Content
  • What shall be presented? How will it be
    presented?
  • Communication is least ambiguous (having several
possible meanings or interpretations) when the
relationship between form and content is clear
    and uncluttered.

9
LookingSources Nature History/Culture
  • Looking is probably the primary education of any
    artist.
  • The process of looking includes an observation
both of nature of human artifacts.
  • Studying art from all periods, regions,
cultures enlightens you to a wealth of visual
    creations.

10
Doing
  • Doing starts with visual experimentation.
  • For most artists and designers-this is thinking
    with materials.
  • Trial error, intuition, or deliberate
application of a system is set into motion.
  • An idea starts to take form, whether in a sketch
    or in final materials.
