Geography

• Ancient Greece was located in the southern region
  of the continent of Europe on land near the
  Mediterranean Sea.
• Ancient Greece, a peninsula, was surrounded on
  three sides by the Mediterranean Sea.
• The land was hilly and mountainous.

Characteristics

• Characteristic Different traits
• Physical Characteristics- Ancient Greece was
  located among mountains and hills, surrounded by
  the Mediterranean Sea, and had limited rich soil.
• Human Characteristics- Ancient Greeks were
  farmers, shipbuilders, and traders.

Adapting to the Environment

• People adapt to their environment in different
  ways to meet their needs.
• Ancient Greeks adapted to their environment by
  farming on the hillsides and building ships.
• Their sturdy ships were used to carry goods to
  trade with other communities on the shores of the
  Mediterranean Sea.

Architecture

• Architects of Greece designed and built many
  beautiful buildings.
• They loved to build magnificent structures using
  huge columns.
• Parthenon- architects of ancient Greece used
  columns in the construction of this temple
  dedicated to the goddess Athena.

• The Greeks influenced our ideas about government.
• Greece is the birthplace of democracy or
  government by the people.
• The Greek government was a direct democracy.
  This means that the people voted to make their
  own rules and laws.

• The Ancient Greeks also contributed to our modern
  society in the area of sports.
• The Greeks loved individual sports such as
  riding, hunting, wrestling, and swimming.
• Our modern Olympic Games come from the Ancient
  Greek athletic festivals.

• The Ancient Greeks created pottery, mosaics,
  sculptures, and paintings.
• Pottery was often painted in patterns of red and
  black.
• Greek temples, public buildings, and homes of the
  wealthy were filled with beautiful paintings and
  pottery.

• A contribution is the act of giving or doing
  something.
• The Greeks made important contributions to our
  modern society.
• The Ancient Greeks influenced our architecture,
  government, and sports.
