• For over 700 years, Turkish flags have been red

Reasons for Entering the War

• Had disagreements with Russia and Romania
• They joined the Central Powers
• Declared war on Russia on October 29, 1914
• They could have stayed neutral but the Germans
  pressured them to join their alliance. (Edward J.

• Britain couldnt keep Germany from going to
  Turkey and then Germany was able to get them to
  sign Turco-German alliance.

• The 600 year Empire had been dissolved
• T.E. Lawrence acted as General for an Arabian
  group who went to Turkish grounds and destroyed
  modes of transportation.

Themes of Global Studies

• Global Interrelatedness- There was an influx of
  precious metals from America. There was also an
  increasing balance of trade between the East and
  West. (Ottoman Empire, 2011)
• Technology vs. Nature- The economy struggled
  because of the coinage, the sharply increasing
  taxes, and resorting to confiscations. This made
  the situation a lot worse. People who worked
  were underpaid, which resulted in theft,
  overtaxation, and corruption. (Ottoman Empire,
  2011)
• Rise of Mass Society- The Ottoman Empire was most
  powerful between the 1480s and the 1560s. In 1517
  the Ottomans took control of Mecca and Medina,
  the holiest cities of Islam. (Ottoman Empire,
