THE ROLE OF THE COACH

    officials with respect
  • Develop and enforce team rules

4
THE ROLE OF THE PLAYER
  • Exhibit good sportsmanship
  • Uphold all academic responsibilities
  • Work with teammates and coaches in a positive
    way
  • Respect the decisions of officials (game and
    minor)
  • Work towards individual and team goals
  • Respect team rules and decisions of coaches

THE ROLE OF THE PARENT
  • Model sportsmanship
  • Support the goals of the team
  • Help your child understand his/her goals within
    the team structure
  • Respect the decisions of officials (game and
    minor)

    school athletics

6
Ask yourself the following questions and then ask
your child the same questions
  • Why is my child playing this sport?
  • What are my goals for my child?
  • What would a successful season look like?
  • What is my childs role on this team?

7
Compare Your Answers with Your Childs Answers
  • Note the similarities and differences
  • If your answers are different, then expectations
    must be adjusted

8
One of the most important things parents can do
is to
  • RELEASE THEM TO THE GAME
  • You play
  • a key role in
  • your childs success!

9
Releasing Your Child to the Game
  • Encourage your child to discuss perceived
    problems privately with the coach
  • Encourage your child to speak positively with an
authority figure (coach or assistant coach)

10
Releasing Your Child to the Game
  • Provide positive encouragement for your child and
    all teammates during the game
  • Focus more on the team and the teams goals and
    less on your childs performance
  • Understand that your child might need time and
    space after a game

11
REMEMBER
  • The athlete may not always show it but he/she
appreciates the coachs time and effort and the
    parents support and encouragement
  • In our efforts to support our schools young
athletes, it is important that we communicate
    positively throughout the season

12
COMMUNICATION
  • The Coach/Advisor will provide
  • Practice and game schedules
  • Tournament arrangements
  • Team rules and expectations
  • Breakdown of season expenses

13
PARENT COMMUNICATION
  • Parents will need to provide information
    regarding scheduling conflicts, illness and
    health issues
  • Occasionally a parent may feel the need to
approach a coach with a concern. Such discussions
can happen positively (this may require the 24
    hour rule)

THANK YOU
