The Creator
  • There is but one God, creator of heaven, earth
    and all things.
  • Christianity teaches that God sent his son,
Jesus, into the world as his chosen servant,
    called The Messiah or Christ.

4
Origins
  • Christianity originated with the ministry of
    Jesus, the founder.
  • Christmas is the celebration of his birth, one of
    the most important Christian holidays.
  • He preached the Gospel, meaning Good News, that
    God was coming to Earth.
  • Jesus urged his followers to repent of sinful
    ways.

5
Crucifixion
  • The Romans charged Jesus with treason for calling
    himself King of the Jews.
  • He was crucified on the cross which was from then
on known as the symbol of Christianity.
  • Jesus had chosen 12 Apostles to preach the Gospel
    after his death.

6
  • Jesus followers did not accept His death as His
end and believed He came back from the dead.
  • Reports of this Resurrection convinced His
followers that he was the son of God.
  • This event is celebrated on Easter.

7
The Savior
  • Christians believe that Jesus is the Savior that
died to save humanity from sin and make salvation
    and eternal life possible.

8
The Trinity
  • After Jesus earthly life, Gods presence
remained on earth in the form of the Holy
    Spirit.
  • In God there are three forms Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. This is the Doctrine of the Trinity.

9
Sacraments
  • Sacraments are PRACTICES based on the life of
    Jesus.
  • Holy Communion represents the Last Supper - the
final meal of Jesus and his disciples.

10
  • Baptism celebrates an individuals entrance into
    Christianity.
  • Practice varies widely, and Christians debate
whether baptism is necessary to go to heaven.

11
Division
  • Early Christians were persecuted by the Romans
until Christianity became the official religion
    of Rome in 392 CE
  • The Roman empire split, and the center of the
Western Church was in Rome whose leader was the
    Pope.
  • This is the Roman Catholic Church

Vatican City- St. Peters Worlds largest church
12
Eastern Orthodox
  • The center of the Eastern Church was in
Constantinople whose leader was the patriarch.
  • By 1054, a split occurred between the Eastern
    Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.

Reformation
  • In 1517 another split occurred called the
    Protestant Reformation.
