What is it?

• Where and when a story takes place
• Includes time, location, weather, physical
  setting, season
• Five senses what the character sees, hears,
  tastes, smells, touches
• Social environment manners, customs, moral
  values of characters society

How is it used?

• Background
• Often critical to the plot
• Needed to understand the protagonist
• Used to set the mood within the story

Questions to determine setting

• When and where does the story take place?
• What is the weather or environment like?
• What does the character see, hear, smell, touch,
  taste?
• Does the author set up a social environment?
• Is the setting important to the story or is it
  only background?
• How long does it take for the story to occur?
