1st Pillar Shahada

• Shahada means faith
• Most important pillar
• All Muslims must believe that there is one God
  and that Muhammad revealed him to man
• There is not true god but Allah and Muhammad is
  His Prophet.
• Muslims must also express this with their words

2nd Pillar - Salat

• Salat means Prayer
• Muslims must pray five times a day while facing
  the Kaaba in Mecca
• Prayers are recited both kneeling, standing, and
  laying on the ground
• Some use prayer rugs
• Muezzin will call to prayer

3rd Pillar - Zakat

• Zakat means giving alms
• Charity
• Take care of the poor, the sick and the orphans
• Basic requirement is 2.5 of ones income

4th Pillar - Sawm

• Ramadan - the holy month of Islam
• Holiest month, the month when God first spoke to
  Muhammad
• Muslims fast during the day (from sunrise to
  sunset)

5th Pillar - Hajj

• Pilgrimage
• Muslims must travel to Mecca and pray to the
  Kaaba
• The journey must be made unless there are
  extenuating circumstances
• Some Muslims make the trip more than once
• Held once a year
