1Setting
2What is Setting?
The setting is when and where the story takes
place.
3Three Elements of Setting Development
- Place- Where does the story take place?
- Time- When does the story take place?
- Environment- How would you describe the place?
What is the habitat and weather like? What
plants, animals, and other objects are in the
place?
4Place
The geographical location of your story.
The place might include such things as a city,
state, country, castle, cottage, playground,
ship, mountain, or stadium.
For example Cairo, London, Morehead City, USS
North Carolina, the Smokey Mountains
5Time
The time period of your story.
The time might include clues that let us know it
is the afternoon, evening, the future, colonial
times, or clock time.
For example 1865, during WWII, three oclock,
2019
6Environment
The characteristics of the location.
The environment might include details that
describe the weather, the noise level, or
darkness.
For example wealthy suburbs, sunny, depression
dustbowl, quiet mountains
7The setting can be used to set the atmosphere for
the story
- During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless
day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds
hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been
passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly
dreary tract of country. - The Fall of the House of Usher
- by Edgar Allan Poe
8Is the Setting Important?
Twilight is set in Forks, Washington, one of the
rainiest and cloudiest places in the United
States.
Why is the setting in Twilight important?
9Is the Setting Convincing?
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is the story of a
secret friendship between the young son of a Nazi
officer and a young Jewish boy, who is imprisoned
at Auschwitz concentration camp during the
Holocaust.
