Franz Ferdinand and Archduchess Sophia in
    Sarajevo in Austria-Hungary
  • Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black Hand, a
    Serbian terrorist group

  • The shot heard round the world

7
Trigger event
  • Austro-Hungarian government blamed Serbia
  • With support of its ally, Germany, delivered an
    ultimatum to Serbia
  • Serbia wouldnt agree to all demands (1), so A-H
    declared war on them
  • Russia and France, sort of allies of Serbia,
    mobilized their forces
  • Germany felt threatened, so ordered them to stop
doing that. They refused so Germany declared war
    on Russia then France.

8
And the dominos continue to fall
  • Germany was planning to attack France by going
through the small neutral country of Belgium.
  • But Britain had signed a treaty with Belgium
saying they would guarantee their neutrality, so
