Outline
  • Project Description
  • Objectives
  • Hardware Description
  • Outcomes
  • Conclusions
  • Future

3
Project Description
  • Need for introduction to dynamic behavior and
earthquake engineering at the undergraduate level
  • Large scale shake tables require significant
resources and are not widely available.
  • Development of experiments takes time and
    expertise

4
Project Description
  • History
  • Proposed at 1998 Trilateral Earthquake Center
    Education Meeting
  • MAE Project ED-9 Instruc. Shake Tables
  • NSF DUE/CCLI Funding Obtained (DUE Grant No.
    9950340 Aug 1999)
  • Consortium became operational summer 2000 under
    direction of Shirley Dyke

5
Project Description
University of Alaska Fairbanks University of
Hawaii
6
Project Description
  • Develop and share hands-on experiments for
    earthquake eng.
  • Identical equipment at each site
  • Experiment sharing through the web

7
Objectives
  • Develop hands-on experiments
  • Earthquake hazard mitigation
  • Dynamics of structures
  • Geotechnical engineering

  • Earthquake Awareness Weekend (WashU)

19
Outcomes
  • Outreach activities
  • K-12 outreach activities (Notre Dame)

20
Outcomes
  • Research

21
Conclusions
  • UCIST is a lab station for hands on
    experimentation in earthquake engineering
  • Many experiments are already available
  • Also, used for outreach and research

22
Future Work
  • Measure the effects of UCIST in eng. education
  • Online survey beginning Spring 02
  • Web statistics monitored
  • Maintain, enhance and expand web site
