Title: Anatomy and Medical Technology

1
Anatomy and Technology
  • M.R.I
  • P.E.T. Scan
  • CT Scan
  • Underlined Points is material you'll need
    to discuss on Test.
  • Anatomy Standards NSTA Science and Technology
  • Keith Tucker
  • West Forsyth H.S.

2
P.E.T. Scan Positron Emission Tomography
  • Use Radioisotopes to detect cellular function of
    tissues.
  • Commonly used is Tagged glucose I.V ...levels
of glucose use (health) in study tissue can be
detected by amount of radiation emitted.
  • -Soft Tissue Targets Brain, Liver, heart,
    Tumors
  • Radioisotopes radioactively decaying elements
  • Radioisotope- unstable element that emits
    radiation as it decays.
  • Ex. Iodine-131 used in thyroid function scans.

3
Brain activity during depression (left) or normal
brain activity (right). Decreased areas of bright
white/yellow shows decreased brain activity due
to depression.

4
P.E.T. Scan Positron Emission Tomography
Tumor fluoresces much more than surrounding
tissue. Fast growing cancer cells use more
tagged glucose than other tissue.

5
MRI- Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • No radiation Computers analyze body structure
with use of a Magnetic field
  • Most detailed
  • FYI...Magnetic Field induces alignment of poles
in molecules of tissues Differing tissues will
have different strength and rate of return to
original state....allowing great contrast of all
    tissue types.

...aka...CT Computer Tomography
X-rays combined w/computers (computer enhances
image...better than plain x-ray film and can see
tissue/organs Inexpensive Quickly
Scan...minutes Good in emergency
situations! Radioactive dye(contrast) can be
used..see blood vessels.... When may this be
useful? What emergency occurrence?
