Inductive Bible Study
  • Observation
  • Interpretation
  • Application

3
Observation
  • With what type(s) of literature are we dealing?
  • Who is speaking? Who is this book/chapter about?
Who are the main characters? What do we know
about them? to whom is God speaking?
  • What events take place in the book?
  • When does the action take place? What are the
    characteristics of this time period?
  • Where does the action take place?
  • Why are the events happening are there any
    precipitating causes?
  • Are there any lists? contrasts? comparisons?
terms of conclusion? expressions of time?

4
Interpretation
  • Verify meaning of terms in passage
  • Note implications of definitions, lists,
    contrasts, comparisons, terms of conclusion,
expressions of time, cause and effect
    relationships, conditional relationships,
    correlations, explanations, reasons, interchanges
    of conversation, summaries, pivots, repetitions,
    and question/answer segments.
  • Expand or elaborate on meaning/purpose of passage
    as needed.
  • Guidelines for Interpretation
  • Remember that context rules.
  • Always seek the full counsel of the Word of God.
  • Remember that Scripture will never contradict
    Scripture.
  • Dont base your convictions on an obscure passage
    of scripture.
  • Interpret scripture literally (and according to
    literary style--historical, prophetic, poetic,
    wisdom literature, epistolary, etc.).
  • Look for the single meaning of the passage (dont
    read into it).

5
Application
  • Ask, "What does this passage mean to me and how
can I apply it to my life?"
  • Make a list of
  • Errors in your beliefs.
  • Attitudes to change.
  • Actions to take or avoid.
  • Sins to confess and forsake.
  • Examples to follow.
  • Promises to claim.
  • Any other personal applications.
  • Perhaps phrase the application in the form of a
    question to yourself.
