Lesson Focus Affixes
  • Language Arts Standards
  • R1.2 Use knowledge of Greek, Latin, and
    Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to understand
    content-area vocabulary.
  • W1.6 Create documents by using word-processing
    skills and publishing programs develop simple
    databases and spreadsheets to manage information
    and prepare reports.
  • WC1.7 Spell derivatives correctly by applying the
    spellings of bases and affixes.
  • LS1.4 Organize information to achieve particular
    purposes and to appeal to the background and
    interests of the audience.

Objectives
  • Students will understand what affixes, prefixes,
    and suffixes are.
  • Students will define the meaning of the 40 most
    common affixes.
  • Students will list at least 2 words that contain
    each of the affixes, break each word down by root
    and affix, and show how the affix affects the
    overall meaning of the word.
  • Students will demonstrate their knowledge by
    creating a Comic Life project that includes at
    least 10 affixes with 2 examples for each.

RUBRIC
The following rubric was given to students to use
as a check-list as they completed their projects.
It was also used a a scoring rubric for their
final project.

Implementationof Lesson
  • Students were given graphic
  • organizers on which to
  • collect data. They used the
  • internet in order to gather
  • data on affix meanings. They
  • were asked to think up words
  • they already knew to use as
  • examples. The class shared
  • ideas clarified meanings.

A second graphic organizer was given for suffixes.

Implementation of Lesson
  • Students were then assigned 10 affixes and put
    into groups of 4 so that all 40 affixes are
    covered by each project. Using the program Comic
    Life, they created a 40-page comic book (10 per
    student) in which they explain the meaning of
    each affix and provide examples of how they are
    used.

Sample Project
  • Students were

  • the affix is added.

Sample Project
Students were also able to input images that they
found online in order to enhance the visual
effect of their project.
