The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by
piling up loads of worldly goods.
9sehas siaanpaa lakh hohi, ta ek na chalai naal

Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not
even one of them will go along with you in the
end.
10kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koorrai tuttai paal

So how can you become truthful? And how can the
veil of illusion be torn away?

O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the
Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His
Will. 1

hukmI hovin Awkwr hukmu n kihAw jweI
By His Command, bodies are created His Command
cannot be described.
13hukmee hovan jeea hukam milai vaddiaaee
hukmI hovin jIA hukim imlY vifAweI
By His Command, souls come into being by His
Command, glory and greatness are obtained.
14hukmee utum neech hukam likh dukh sukh paaeeahi
hukmI auqmu nIcu hukim iliK duK suK pweIAih
By His Command, some are high and some are low
by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are
obtained.
15eknaa hukmee bakhshees ek hukmee sadaa
bhavaaeeahi
ieknw hukmI bKsIs ieik hukmI sdw BvweIAih
Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven
others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever.
16hukmai andar sabh ko baahar hukam na koé
hukmY AMdir sBu ko bwhir hukm n koie
Everyone is subject to His Command no one is
beyond His Command.
17naanak hukmai je bujhai ta haumai kehai na koé

O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does
not speak in ego. 2

Some sing of His Power-who has that Power?

Some sing of His Gifts, and know His Sign and
Insignia.
20gaavai ko gun vaddiaaeeaa chaar

Some sing of His Glorious Virtues, Greatness and
Beauty.
21gaavai ko vidiaa vikham veechaar
gwvY ko ividAw ivKmu vIcwru
Some sing of knowledge obtained of Him, through
difficult philosophical studies.
22gaavai ko saaj karé tan kheh

Some sing that He fashions the body, and then
again reduces it to dust.

Some sing that He takes life away, and then again
restores it.

Some sing that He seems so very far away.
25gaavai ko vekhai haadraa hadoor

Some sing that He watches over us, face to face,
ever-present.

There is no shortage of those who preach and
teach.

Millions upon millions offer millions of sermons
and stories.

The Great Giver keeps on giving, while those who
receive grow weary of receiving.

Throughout the ages, consumers consume.

The Commander, by His Command, leads us to walk
on the Path.

So what offering can we place before Him, by
which we might see the Darbaar of His Court?

What words can we speak to evoke His Love?
36amrit velaa sach naao vaddiaaee veechaar

In the Amrit Velaa, the ambrosial hours before
dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His
Glorious Greatness.
37karmee aavai kaprraa nadree mokh duaar
krmI AwvY kpVw ndrI moKu duAwru
By the karma of past actions, the robe of this
physical body is obtained. By His Grace, the Gate
of Liberation is found.

O Nanak, know this well the True One Himself is

Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall
come to your home.

gurmuiK nwdM gurmuiK vydM gurmuiK rihAw smweI
Following the Gurus Word one can listen to the
Sound-current of the Naad, and wisdom is
obtained. Through the Guru's Word one realises
Vaheguru is all-pervading.
46gur eesar gur gorakh barmaa gur paarbatee maaee
guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI
For a true follower of the Guru, his Guru is like
Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu and their spouses.
Therefore, one need not worship any deity and
instead respect follow his own Guru.
47jé ho jaanaa aakhaa naahee kehnaa kathan na
jaaee
jy hau jwxw AwKw nwhI khxw kQnu n jweI
Even knowing Vaheguru, I cannot describe Him He
cannot be described in words.

If I am pleasing to Him, then that is my
pilgrimage and cleansing bath. Without pleasing
Him, what good are ritual cleansings?

I gaze upon all the created beings without the
karma of good actions, what are they given to
receive?

Within the mind are gems, jewels and rubies, if
you listen to the Guru's Teachings, even once.

or even ten times more,

and even if you were known throughout the nine
continents and followed by all,

with a good name and reputation, with praise and
fame throughout the world-

still, if the Lord does not bless you with His
Glance of Grace, then who cares? What is the use?
59keettaa andar keett kar dosee dos dharé

Among worms, you would be considered a lowly
worm, and even contemptible sinners would hold
you in contempt.
60naanak nirgun gun karé gunvantiaa gun dé

O Nanak, Vaheguru blesses the unworthy with
virtue, and bestows virtue on the virtuous.

No one can even imagine anyone who can bestow
virtue upon Him. 7

devotee, who obeys Vaheguru.

Saints concentrate their minds on the Guru alone.

One may reflect on Vaheguru and describe Him as
much as possible

Yet the doings of Vaheguru cannot be counted.

DOlu Drmu dieAw kw pUqu
The (mythical bull representing piety) is the
outcome of the compassion (of Vaheguru).
Note The mythical bull is believed to support
the Earth from underneath.
117santokh thaap rakhiaa jin soot
sMqoKu Qwip riKAw ijin sUiq
It (Vahegurus compassion) holds the earth at its
position with patience.

One will be called true if they realise this

If he can know as to how much weight is place on
the supposed bull.

Beyond this earth there are many more and more
earths.

What powers bears their load from underneath?
(not the supposed bull, but Vahegurus laws).

There is the ever flowing pen of Vaheguru.

Yogis, who in their minds have no attachment for

True devotees, who reflect over the excellences

Countless leave this world after establishing
their kingdoms by force.

Countless are cut-throats who commit murders.

Countless are sinners who commit sins.

Countless are liars, who practice falsehood and
suffer transmigration.

Countless sinners are filthy and eat (speak)

Countless are the slanderers, who carry the
weight of their sins on their heads.

Nanak describes the state of the lowly.
