What is Demining?

• Demining is the process of mine-clearance that
  is, the de-activation and removal of mines.

What is a Landmine?

• A landmine is an explosive device, designed to
  wound, kill or otherwise incapacitate people or
  designed to destroy or damage vehicles during and
  at the end of a war.
• Unfortunately landmines kill a lot of innocent
  people and children.

What makes a landmine explode?

• Landmines are usually initiated by pressure or
  trip wire.
• Pressure
• Direct downward pressure, like stepping on the
  landmine, will make it explode.
• Tripwire
• A tripwire is attached to the fuse.  When
  pressure is applied to the tripwire, a pin is
  normally pulled out of the fuse making the
  landmine explode.  Some landmines maybe set up
  with more than one tripwire.

Where are mines mostly found?

• Mines are found in over 60 countries around the
  world. However, most of the mines are found in
  Afghanistan, Bosnia, Croatia, Cambodia, Vietnam
  and Mozambique.
• Did you know that Pakistan is the biggest mine
  producer?

How are landmines removed?

• There are a few ways to remove mines
• To manually disarm them.
• To carpet the minefield with artillery barrage.
• Driving a heavy vehicle like a tank or bulldozer
  through the minefield to deliberately detonate
  the mines.
• Cutting holes in the mine without detonating its
  contents.

What I Think About Demining

• I think that demining is a good thing, but it can
  also be very dangerous because the landmines can
  explode on you or near you and blow your body
  parts off or even kill you. I dont know if the
  workers do the job volunteering or if they are
  forced to. They might feel forced because their
  family might be poor and they will need money to
  live.
