Aim of Event
  • During the course of the day delegates will
  • learn about the total package and how it will
    help you achieve better results
  • be taken through the impact of the changes to the
    new specification
  • develop a full understanding of controlled
    assessment and how Edexcel will support this
    aspect
  • understand the assessment implications of the new
    specification
  • have the opportunity to explore delivery
    strategies applicable to the new specification.

The Structure of the Qualification
  • The Edexcel GCSE in Leisure and Tourism
    specification consists of 4 units
  • Unit 1 The Leisure and Tourism Industry
  • Unit 2 - Sales, Promotion and Operations in
    Leisure and Tourism
  • Unit 3 The Leisure and Tourism Environment
  • Unit 4 Customers and Employment in Leisure and
    Tourism

Structure of the Qualification
  • The GCSE in Leisure and Tourism consists of Unit
    1 and then either Unit 2 or Unit 4
  • The GCSE in Leisure and Tourism Double Award
    consists of units 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  • The qualification will be assessed in the
    following way
  • Units 1 and 3 externally assessed
  • Units 2 and 4 internally assessed by controlled
    assessment

Qualification Assessment Objectives
  • Candidates will be assessed under 3 main
    objectives
  • AO1 Recall, select and communicate their
    knowledge and understanding of a range of leisure
    and tourism contexts
  • AO2 Apply skills, knowledge and understanding in
    a variety of leisure and tourism contexts and in
    planning and carrying out investigations and
    tasks
  • AO3 Analyse and evaluate information, sources
    and evidence, make reasoned judgements and
    present conclusions

Terminal Rule in GCSE 2009
  • QCA has a Terminal Rule for unitised
    qualifications. Unitised qualifications offer
    individual unit assessment.
  • Candidates are able to resit each unit once.
  • The rule states that
  • at least 40 of the assessment must be taken in
    the final exam session
  • the final exam session is the session in which
    candidates are claiming their award.
  • the results from these terminal attempts must be
    used for the calculation of the final grade.

Pre-Release
  • QCA requirement in creating greater rigour to the

  • Controlled assessment adds integrity to the
    qualification
  • Edexcel set task
  • Number of scenarios from which the student can
    choose from
  • Tasks will be reviewed every year in accordance
    with QCA regulations
  • PLEASE NOTE any students wanting to retake the
    controlled assessment unit will need to use the
    one available for the session in which are
    retaking they can not submit their original as
    the scenario will probably have changed.

Controlled Assessment
  • In controlled assessment, control levels are set
    for three processes
  • TASK SETTING
  • TASK TAKING
  • TASK MARKING
  • The control levels are set for each process so
    that the overall levels of control secure
    validity and reliability

Controlled Assessment
  • Summary of Conditions
  • Preparation and writing of the observation
    reports must take place under controlled
    conditions
  • Students will be allowed time to write their
    reports in a lesson supervised by the teacher
  • The write up will take place over several lessons
  • Materials will be collected at the end of each
    class and handed back at the beginning of the
    next class
  • Work must be produced individually

Controlled Assessment
  • Task Setting Tasks to be set by Edexcel but
    centres will choose the organisations they study.
    This will be reviewed each year in accordance
    with QCA.
  • Task Taking Work completed under supervision by
    teacher which will be recorded on the Controlled
    Assessment Sheet. Both teacher and student to
    sign Authenticity
  • Task Marking Marking to be carried out by
    teacher. Moderation will be carried out by
    Edexcel.

Authenticity
  • All students must sign an Authentication
    Statement. Statements relating to work not
    sampled should be held securely in your centre.
  • Those which relate to sampled students must be
    attached to the work and sent to the moderator.
  • Any student unable to provide an Authentication
    Statement will receive zero credit for the
    component.
  • Where credit has been given by a centre assessor
    without the accompanying authentication
    statement, the Moderator will inform Edexcel and
    the mark adjusted to zero.

Paper Format
  • Each externally assessed unit is assessed through
    a 1 hour written examination paper
  • Each paper is marked out of 50
  • Both Unit 1 and Unit 3 papers will consist of
    multiple choice, short answer and extended
    writing style questions covering all the unit
    topics
