Purpose
  • In these experiments triphenylmethanol is
dissolved in highly acidic medium forming the
    propeller-shaped triphenylmethyl carbocation. The
resulted carbocation reacts quickly with methanol
or bromide ion to give the target compounds.

Comments
  • Follow pp. 478-481 (microscale).
  • Follow the lab handout for all experimental
procedures. Wearing rubber gloves is necessary
during this lab. You will work with corrosive and
    harmful compounds.
  • Determine mp and calculate yield of final
products. Low to moderate yields should are
    typical.
  • (Moles Product / Moles Starting Material) x 100
    Yield

Safety
  • Concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrobromic acid
    are corrosive, handle with care.
  • Triphenylmethyl derivatives are corrosive and
irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
Do not swallow and inhale, avoid contact with
skin and eyes. Wear eye protection and rubber
    gloves.
