  • Emerged from L. Ron Hubbards ideas of dianetics
    and science fiction
  • Not a popular lifestyle of its time period
  • Developed in 1952 as a hierarchical organization
    promoting his beliefs
  • More of an applied religious philosophy than a
    dogmatic religion, according to Hubbard
  • Started as secular, but eventually developed as a
    religion

Structure Of Beliefs
  • For an organization to officially apply the
    beliefs of scientology to their works, they must
    get licensed
  • No official religious text, but rather, a
    chronologically organized compilation of 18 books
    and 3,000 lectures.
  • Religion organized as a complex network of
    organizations
  • No absolute right or wrong
  • Cannot free yourself without working to free
    others
