When and Where
  • The eight day Running of the Bulls begins on
    July 7th and ends on the 14th
  • It takes place during the Festival of San Fermin
  • Where Pamplona, Spain

History of the Run
  • The run was a practical way to get the Bulls
    through town to the ring.
  • Butchers started to run along with the bulls to
    get in the bid in for the bull that they wanted.
  • The actual run was made famous by Ernest
    Hemingways 1927 novel Fiesta The Sun also Rises

THE BULLS
  • The bulls are bred to fight and can weigh over
    1,300 pounds (600 kilograms).
  • They have razor-sharp horns and can turn on a
    dime

The Necktie
  • The necktie is put on, on July the 6th at 1200
    oclock midday with the firing of the rocket the
    first rocket and is worn until the end of the
    festival on July 14th.

The Praises to San Fermin
  • Every morning before the run, the runners gather
    to sing praises to the Saint san Fermin.
  • The song goes "A San Fermín pedimos, por ser
    nuestro patrón, nos guíe en el encierro dándonos
    su bendición" ("We ask San Fermín, as our Patron,
    to guide us through the Bull Run and give us his
    blessing.")

The Route
  • Starts at the bottom of Santo Domingo
  • Moves into to Ayuntamiento square and on to short
    street called Mercaderes.
  • The route takes a sharp turn on to street called
    Estafeta.
  • Callejón, this is the narrow corral leading into
    the bull ring.

The Festival Comes to a Close
  • After singing a sad farewell to the Fiesta they
    head to the Church of San Lorenzo.
  • They deposit their candles and neckties on the
    gate where the statue of San Fermin is kept.
