The Life of a Victorian Child

Everyday life
  • Life for Victorian children was very hard because
every child had to go to work until the acts
started unless they were in a rich family. The
acts were factory act in 1833, mine act was in
1842, the factory act was again in 1844, gang act
in 1868 which was no child under 8 could be in a
gang. Forsters elementary education act in 1870,
the bank holiday was in 1871, gives everyone a
bank holiday. Another factory act in 1874 where
no child under the age of ten can have a factory
job, the climbing boys act in 1875 made it
illegal to send boys up chimneys, and finally the
prevention of cruelty to children act in 1889.

Work they did
  • Most Victorian girls worked as maids for the
richer people but if they werent as talented
they would work in cotton factory's or if their
even more unlucky they would work in mines. Now
boys on the other hand had even worse jobs
because they had to be a trapper in a mine or a
scarer which is like being a scarecrow thats
runs and finally a chimney sweeper where you were
sent up a chimney to sweep it.

Children at school
  • At school teachers were extremely strict and you
would beaten by a cane, belt or even a ruler.
Girls and boys had different lessons at the end
of the day like the boys did technical drawing
and drills while the girls did house work and
needlework but at the start of the day they did
    reading, writing and arithmetic.

5
Life expectants
  • Children would probaly only live till seven or
eight thats why their parents wanted lots so
would carry on with their lives but they would
probably only make it to 25 if they were lucky.

6
Who helped Victorian children?
  • Dr. Barnardo and Lord Shaftesbury helped
Victorian children. Dr. Barnardo made ragged
schools while lord Shaftesbury helped children in
    the mine.
