Title: Magic Light Alarm Clock
1Magic Light Alarm Clock
2WAKE UP!
- We have designed a revolutionary alarm clock to
eliminate the possibility for oversleeping, by
integrating new technology with past design.
3Thought Process
- Must be an acceptable alternate for the current
alarm clock market - The design must be user-friendly
- We need to form a solution that prevents the user
from easily accessing a turn off function - Must wake the consumer
4Circadian RhythmThe basic principle of
biological control for sleeping in the human body
- The light-dark cycle controlled by the circadian
rhythm, determines when a person sleeps, and
stays awake. - A recent study has shows that light and dark
possibly effect the circadian response to light,
thus governing the time of sleep ( Prichard 1).

5What Does All Of This Mean?
- Interference in an individuals dark cycle may
result in their awakening - The prime resource of this disturbance could be
the introduction of light into their morning
waking procedure - Result alarm clock complete with light!
6Whats the Big Deal?
- The snooze button is
- hit too often
- People are late for events
- like work and school
- Current alarm clocks just
- do not work!

7Problem Statement
- There needs to be an effective alarm clock that
can get people out of bed without full use of the
snooze button and classic buzzing alarm.

8Over Sleepers
9Current Alarms
- Cell phone
- device that is commonly owned
- Primary alarm
- Secondary alarm
- Personizable
- Digital
- Small
- Plug in
- Non-expensive
- Not Reliable (Snooze)
10Current Alarms (cont.)
- Robotic Bumper
- Slightly Expensive
- Has the ability to break things
- Computer
- Not very efficient
- Can be turned off completely, not reliable.

11Design Alternatives
- Extendable mechanical arm
- Mechanical arm hits the table, making a loud
noise - Odor emitting alarm clock
- Omits foul smelling odor
- Static electricity
- Utilizes static shock to awaken the individual
- Vibrating bed
- Mechanisms under bed posts create an earthquake
effect
12The Bright Idea (SOLUTION)
- An alarm clock with the capability of
simultaneously turning on a light. - The light is controlled wirelessly using Radio
Frequency (RF) technology. - The light can be set up anywhere in the room
since it uses a wireless connection. - The light has the ability to wake people up with
a burst of energy, and forces them to get out of
bed to turn the light off. - A compact fluorescent 20 Watt, 6.5 Diameter Cool
White T9 Circline Bulb will be used which is
powered by a 12V sealed lead acid battery.
13The Bright Idea (SOLUTION) Con'td.
- An RF transmitter will be placed inside the alarm
clock. - A corresponding receiver is placed in the light.
- At desired time, the RF transmitter sends the
signal to the receiver in the light. - Results in alarm sounding synchronized with the
light turning on.

15Design Choices
- We chose RF over Infra-Red to have a reliable
connection, that doesnt have to be in a direct
line of sight, and chose it over Bluetooth for
price. - We implemented an SD Card slot instead of
internal memory with a USB port for price, and
because SD Cards are widely used today in items
such as cameras, cell phones, and computers. - Incandescent bulbs only produce 15 lumens per
watt, while a fluorescent bulb produces 40-60
lumens per watt. In addition, fluorescent bulbs
are more environmentally safe. (Teschler 56)

16Music
- Music can be loaded into the alarm clock via
Secure Digital cards - Can be encoded in various bitrates of MP3 format
- You can listen to music anytime you want, or set
it as the sound to wake up to - Fit approximately 32 songs on a 128MB SD Card
17- Wall Light
- Digital Alarm Clock
- Product Price
- Raw Material Costs
- RF Transmitter With
- Receiver and Control
- Business Employee Costs
- Five Employees _at_ 25 per hour
- Operating Costs
- Consumer Costs
- Replacement Bulbs
- Electricity usage
18ImpactsSocial, Ethical and Environmental
- Reduces the number of employees late to work
- Pollution is a byproduct of the plastic
manufacturing process - Use of energy efficient lighting
- Effects of increased plastic and electric
consumption - Environmental issues concerning product disposal

19Summary
- Now that the design is completed, all that is
left is to build the prototype - The Magic Light Alarm Clock will correct the
issues with current solutions and the design
alternatives. - Waking up will no longer be an issue for the
designs buyers
