    prophets claiming Jesus deity whether in
    figurative or explicit language.
  • Daniel implied the deity of the Messiah as the
    cloud rider -- Dan. 713
  • The apostle John begins his entire gospel
    centered upon the claim of Jesus deity - Jn 11

  • It is Jesus, ultimately, who made his own claim
    to deity as the Son of God.
  • In His statement, Before Abraham was, I am
  • In the last lesson, we saw Jesus claim as I Am
    the Bread of Life the giver of life
  • The apostle John records another account when
    Jesus claimed I Am the Light of the world

  • The O.T. prophets proclaimed that God was the
    light for those who sought truth and salvation.
  • David declared Jehovah and His word as his lamp,
    path and salvation. Psa. 1828 271 119105
  • Micah on behalf of Israel/Judah spoke of how
    God would lead them out of their darkness
    (captivity, sin) into His light (return from
    captivity, restored) -- Mic 78-9
  • Isaiah makes prophetic use of light with
    striking features that also allude to the Messiah
    -- Isa. 91-2

  • New Testament figures proclaim that Jesus was the
    light for those who sought truth and/or
    salvation.
  • Very similar to David, Micah, and especially
    Isaiahs words is the beginning testimony of
    Jesus Christ -- Jn. 11-4
  • John (the Baptist) testified that Jesus was the
    light of the world -- Jn. 16-9

  • Jesus teaching I am the light of the world.
  • He made His claim of deity, but wanted people to
    accept the teaching behind this claim.
  • Jesus had just exposed the darkness (sin) of
    those who condemned the woman guilty of
    fornication -- Jn. 81-11
  • He follows up stating He is the light of the
    world those who follow Jesus would not walk in
    darkness but have life in Him -- Jn. 812
  • Those who accepted His teachings (thus Him) would
    be set free from the bondage of darkness
    through the truth (His light) -- Jn. 831-32

Jesus Testimony is Sufficient
  • Setting for Jesus claim Feast of Tabernacles
    Jn. 72, 14, 37
  • Thousands of tabernacles throughout Jerusalem
    made -- Jn. 114
  • The Jews by Jesus day also had water
    libations (drink offering) -- Jn. 737
  • Towering menorahs would be lit (and light up the
    city!). Jn. 812

Jesus Testimony is Sufficient
  • According to the Law of Moses, the testimony of
    one was never sufficient -- Dt. 1915
  • With God, however, there is no one greater than
    Himself -- Heb. 613-18
  • Yet, Jesus regards His testimony of Himself as
    sufficient, as only God could -- Jn. 814

  • The apostle John believed that only God could be
    referred to as Light. 1 Jn. 15-7
  • Either, those who heard Jesus would see the
    Light. Jn. 935-38
  • Or, they would be blind to the Light of the
    world. Jn. 939-41

  • Jesus is the Light of the world who as (the
    Son of) God brings salvation to all.
