• Cortes was born in Spain in 1485.

• Cortes goal was to find gold and treasure.

• Cortes sailed to many places. First, to Santo
  Domingo in 1504 where he became the mayor. He
  also sailed to Cuba in 1518 and in 1519 he sailed
  to Mexico.

• In this painting, Montezuma meets Cortes and
• an army of Spanish riders and soldiers on foot.

• Cortes had a war with Montezuma. He had 600 men
  with him in Mexico. He eventually defeated the
  Aztecs. Then he became their ruler.

• We think Cortes was brave to fight such a large
  army because he only took 600 men but Montezuma
  had more men than Cortes.
