UniversitiesWednesday, January 28, 2009 Cuts
for universitiesHere I a sample of cuts proposed
by Arizonas three universities Tuesday. Cuts
would occur before July and total 100 million
most would become permanent.  Arizona State
University 45.3 million. Use employee
furloughs to reduce all employees pay by 12
percent before July. Reduce staff.  Northern
Arizona University 15.3 million. Cancel new
programs, such as occupational therapists and
physician assistants. Extend hiring freeze and
lay off staff reduce employee health benefits.
Reduce services, programs and money going to
athletics. University of Arizona 39.5
million.Eliminate 400 positions through
attrition and layoffs. Combine and eliminate
academic colleges and programs. Reduce
operating costs of all programs and units by 5
percent.  Impact on next years
studentsLarger class sizes. Fewer courses
