History of Geoboard

• A board covered by a lattice of pegs around which
  one can span rubber bands to form segments and
  polygons. It was invented by the English
  mathematician and pedagogist Caleb Gattegno
  (1911-1988) as a manipulative tool for teaching
  elementary geometry in schools.

• Sizes
• 5 x 5 wood or plastic
• Single or double sided
• 11 x 11 blue or clear plastic
• Used more in middle schools
• 7 x 7

Common Use One

• Counting pegs inside, outside, and on the banded
  shape.

Common Use Two

• Naming, forming, comparing, and making
  generalizations about geometric shapes. For
  instance, telling how two shapes are alike and
  different.

Fore Seen Problems with Geoboards

• Pre-teaching about proper use of rubber bands
• Possible flying rubber band (unintentional)
• Breaking/Cracking
• Fine motor issues
• Possible solution is a crochet hook

Getting ready

• Please pair up with a student whose birthday is
  closest to yours without going backwards.
  Example Heathers birthday is August 22, so she
  would pair up with the next person that has a
  birthday past that date.
• Please sit across for your partner.
