What is an agora?
  • Place of congregation marketplace.
  • Literally means assembly.

What was it used for?
  • Marketplace- buying and selling of various types
    of goods.
  • Meeting place- civilians, banker and politicians
    would meet.
  • Political, commercial and social activity.

Who would attend?
  • Different classes of people
  • Civilians, traders, slaves and politicians.
  • No women. Inferior and not citizens.

  • Law courts and senate were located here
  • Laws were posted and voted on

    periods.
  • 3000 B.C residential/burial area.
  • 6th Century became public area.
  • Abandoned by A.D 580 after the Slavic invasion.
  • 1834- Athens became capitol and agora was again
    residential.
