Title: MITOTIC CELL DIVISION

1
MITOTIC CELL DIVISION
  • Cell Reproduction Without Sex

2
Cell Life Cycle
  • cell life cycle includes a period of growth and
preparation for cell division (blue). This period
    is called Interphase.
  • mitosis is the period of time that the cell
    spends reproducing.

3
Plant Cell Mitosis
  • the many stages of the cell life cycle can be
seen in the image to the right
  • the process of cell reproduction includes
    prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase

4
Interphase
  • longest phase of life cycle
  • G1 phase of rapid growth and increase in
    protein and cell RNA
  • S synthesis phase when DNA duplicates
  • G2 - phase of organelle development and growth
    in preparation for cell division

5
Prophase
  • chromosomes appear
  • the nucleolus disappears
  • the nuclear membrane begins to break down

6
Very Late Prophase
  • nuclear membrane has disappeared
  • chromosomes start to move to the equator of the
    cell
  • each chromosome has two identical chromatids

7
Metaphase
  • chromosomes align along the equator of the cell
  • spindles that are attached to the poles connect
    to the centromeres

8
Early Anaphase
  • chromosomes are pulled to the poll by the
    contraction of the spindle fibers
  • chromatids are separated at the centromere

9
Late Anaphase
  • chromosomes begin to congregate at the poles
  • the energy for this process if provided by the
    mitochondria

10
Early Telophase
  • the new cell wall begins to form to separate the
    new cell
  • the chromosomes begin to form a nucleus

11
Late Telophase
  • the chromosomes start to uncoil and become less
    dense
  • two new identical cells are formed

12
Mitosis Review
  • all four stages of mitosis can be seen in this
    picture.
  • note the process by which the red and blue
    chromosomes separate.
