Title: Oil Well Logging

1
Oil Well Logging
2
Oil Well Basics
Oil well is a drilled hole (1000-15000 deep)
3-10 in diameter. It is cased all the way
through. Pipe has holes for oil mixture
inlet. Oil saturates formation. It resides in
pores of some solid earth regions.
3
Introduction to Oil Well Logging
  • Well logging is an ordinary process in oil well
development. It is also used in water wells.
  • It is essential to know approximate porosity,
permeability and oil concentration in the earth
    around the well

4
Problem
  • 730,000 wells in the USA producing lt1200/day
(10 of oil used in USA)
  • No technology to fit these small wells. Industry
leaders like Schlumberger have tools fit for
    12000/day wells.
  • Stripper well owners normally cant afford to
    rent well logging technology.

5
Taylors Grant Goals
  • Cheaper technology that can be used easily by
    stripper well owners
  • Nuclear detector tool
  • Video Camera
  • Portable Winch system
  • Pressure Sensor

6
Work and Testing Done
  • Nuclear detector prototype built and lab tested
  • Prowex tool structure built and tested under
    150psi liquid pressure

7
Objectives
  • To design and build a system that can handle the
weight of using a winch for down oil well
    operations.
  • The winch has to be able to hold at least 1000
    feet of cable.
  • It also has to be motor-operated for ease of use.
  • The system has to be stable.
  • The optical encoder has to be accurate to within
    an inch.
  • It has to be lightweight

8
Figuring out a Design
  • Figure out whats cheap, lightweight and sturdy

9
Making a 3D Model
10
Optical Encoder
11
Making a Model
  • The same material as the Science Building Model
  • After the Model we changed the design

12
Future Work
  • Build the system
  • Figure out all the wiring
  • Finish figuring out the motor
  • Testing
