1
NEW INTELLIGENT ADAPTIVE CONTROL SCHEMES
  • Team Members Garth Girman
  • Eleanor Kurtz
  • H. John Swarthout III
  • Advisor Dr. Khalid Al-Olimat

2
Scope of Presentation
  • Introduction
  • Problem Identification
  • Design Solutions
  • Project Management
  • Conclusions

3
Adaptive Control
  • Attempts to control plant without human operator.
  • Adapts to changes in operating conditions.
  • Two leading assemblies, MRAC and STR, are
    considered.

4
Problems of Adaptive Control
  • Single reference model in MRAC may have
    unacceptable dynamic performance.
  • Single identification model in STR may not
    properly identify the plant.

5
Problem Identification
  • Conventional adaptive control based on single
model approach cannot be as effective as
    required.
  • Thus, more intelligent control is needed.

6
Fuzzy Logic
  • Membership Function
  • Fuzzy Sets
  • Degrees of Membership
  • Fuzzy Rule Sets
  • If A is small and B is large, then C is
medium and D is very small.

7
Current Research
  • MRAC
  • Attempts with Multiple Models and Switching
    Algorithms
  • Single Parameter Evaluation with Fuzzy Logic
  • STR
  • Multiple Combinations of Identification and
    Controller Schemes

8
Proposed Solutions
  • MRAC with Multiple Online Reference Model
    Parameter Evaluation
  • STR with Multiple Identification Models
  • STR with Multiple Online Parameter Evaluation for
    a Single Identification Model

9
Final MRAC Solution
  • Model Reference Adaptive Control
  • Uses Model-Following Approach
  • Multiple Model Parameter Evaluation

  • Uses Parameter-Following Approach
  • Minimum Variance Controller
  • Recursive Least Squares Identification
  • Combined Multiple Identification Model and Fuzzy
    Logic Parameter Evaluation

Project Conclusions
  • Both new MRAC and STR designs resulted in
    improved overall performance.
  • New designs show promise, but more research is
needed before implementation would be practical.

25
Future Plans
  • Presentation of MRAC paper at IEEE CCA, June
    23-25.
  • Submission of STR paper to Power Systems Journal.
  • Allow others to use our work to further research
    in adaptive control.
