Title: Parts of Plot

1
Parts of Plot
  • The Building Blocks of a Story!

2
What is a Plot?
  • The plot of a story is its chain of related
    events.
  • The plot is made up of 5 major parts
  • You may remember the parts of plot by remembering
    the plot mountain.

3
Basic Situation
  • The first part of the plot that gives the
    setting, characters, and conflict?
  • It gives us the basics of the story.

4
Setting
  • When and where the story takes place.
  • The setting can be realistic or totally made up.
  • Its important to always tell the when along
    with the where
  • In historical or science fiction, the when may
be more important than the where.

5
Conflict
  • The major problem the characters must solve in
    the story.
  • Man vs. Man
  • Man vs. Self
  • Man vs. Nature
  • Man vs. Society

Conflict may be internal or external
6
Complications
  • Smaller problems or obstacles characters run
across while trying to solve the conflict.
  • They complicate things and add suspense and
    entertainment to the story.

7
Climax
  • The most exciting moment in the story the
    turning point.
  • Think of a fence post. At this point the story
may fall in several different directions before
    the conflict is solved.

8
Falling Actions
  • After the climax, the ending of the story is not
    too far away.
  • Think of the falling action as a sliding board.
  • Falling Acion is all the events leading from to
climax down to the ending (Resolution)

9
Rising Action
  • The rising action of a story is all the plot
events leading up to the climax.
  • The rising action includes all the complications
that make a story interesting or suspenseful
  • Think of a roller coast climbing up the hill
    before it falls.

10
Resolution
  • Root word (Resolve) means to solve problems.
  • The resolution is the end of the story where the
    conflict is solved.
  • All loose ends are tied up.

Whew, Im done!
11
Protagonist
  • A protagonist is the main character in a piece of
    literature.
  • The protagonist usually represents the good
    side

12
Antagonist
  • The Antagonist is the character(s) or force
    acting against the protagonist.
  • You may hear the antagonist referred to as the
    villain

13
Theme
  • A storys theme is the topic or idea the author
wants you to understand in the piece.
  • A story may have more than one theme.
  • The theme may look like a moral, or it may be a
general idea about life and people.
  • Ex One theme in The Egypt Game is the power of
    imagination.

14
Infer / Inference
  • When we infer, we make an educated guess based on
the information provided in the passage.
  • Think of it as reading between the lines
  • Ex I know a volcano erupted in Pompeii. The
story says the smoke and air are changing. I can
infer that the volcano is getting ready to erupt
    in the story.
