Title: BILIARY AND PANCREATIC STENTS

1
BILIARY AND PANCREATIC STENTS
  • WHICH STENT AND WHEN?

2
TYPES OF STENTS

3
PLASTIC BILIARY STENTS
  • USES
  • BILIARY ATRESIA
  • BILIARY CIRRHOSIS
  • BILIARY STRICTURE

4
  • injury to the bile ducts during surgery for
gallbladder removal (accounting for 80 of
    nonmalignant strictures)
  • pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • primary sclerosing cholangitis (an inflammation
of the bile ducts that may cause pain, jaundice,
    itching, or other symptoms)
  • gallstones
  • radiation therapy
  • blunt trauma to the abdomen

5
BILE DUCT
  • A bile duct is any of a number of long tube-like
structures that carry bile. Bile, required for
the digestion of food, is excreted by the liver
into passages that carry bile toward the hepatic
duct, which joins with the cystic duct (carrying
bile to and from the gallbladder) to form the
common bile duct, which opens into the intestine.
The biliary tree is the whole network of various
sized ducts branching through the liver.

6
BILIARY ATRESIA
  • Biliary atresia is a blockage in the tubes
(ducts) that carry a liquid called bile from the
liver to the gallbladder. The condition is
congenital, which means it is present from birth.
  • Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors
  • Biliary atresia occurs when the bile ducts inside
or outside the liver do not develop normally. It
is not known why the biliary system fails to
    develop normally.

7
BILIARY CIRRHOSIS
  • Definition
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis is irritation and
swelling (inflammation) of the bile ducts of the
liver, which blocks the flow of bile. This
    obstruction damages liver cells.
  • Alternative Names
  • PBC
  • Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors
  • The cause of inflamed bile ducts in the liver is
not known. The disease more commonly affects
    middle-aged women

8
BILIARY STRICTURE
  • Definition
  • A biliary stricture is an abnormal narrowing of
the common bile duct, the tube that moves bile (a
substance that helps with digestion) from the
    liver to the small intestine.
  • Alternative Names
  • Bile duct stricture

9
CONT. BILIARY STRICTURE
  • Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors
  • A biliary stricture is often caused by surgical
injury to the bile ducts. For example, it may
occur after surgery to remove the gallbladder.
  • Other causes of this condition include
  • Cancer of the bile duct
  • Damage and scarring due to a gallstone in the
    bile duct
  • Pancreatitis
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
