  • Advantages of Peer Tutoring
  • One to one Tutoring has been recognized as being
    superior to group instruction.
  • Through tutoring, instruction can be adapted to
    the learners pace, learning style, and level of
    understanding.
  • It provides extra attention and emotional support
    to those students who need this type of learning
    environment.

Advantages to the Tutor and Tutee
  • The Tutor
  • The tutor academically benefits from time spent
    reviewing and practicing material.
  • They also may experience higher cognitive gains
    and improve communication skills and overall work
    habits.
  • Tutors become role models for their tutee.

  • Tutees benefit academically from receiving one to
    one assistance.
  • They gain self esteem as he or she understands
    the taught material.
  • Tutees look up to their tutors.

Components of a Successful Program
  • The design of a tutoring program is dictated by
    its objectives. These include, age group
    targeted, subject area, and the availability of
    human, physical and financial resources.
  • Goals and a timeline needs to be established.
  • Criteria for tutor selection need to be in
    place.
  • All teachers and administration need to be on
    board.

  • Program needs to be offered to all students and
    publicized.
  • Tutors need to be well trained.
  • Tutors need on going supervision and support.
  • Set procedures for matching tutor and tutee need
    to be in place.
  • Evaluation process needs to be in place.

St. Alberts Program
  • Program began as part of our school accreditation
  • plan. Was one of the areas that had not been
    met.
  • Committee was formed to research programs in fall
    of
  • 2003.
  • Research into existing programs started in Spring
    of
  • 2004.
  • Committee visited and observed 4 programs.
  • Summer of 2004, program objectives and timeline
    set.
  • Fall 2004 Program introduced to administration
    and
  • Staff.
