A JOURNEY
ENCOURAGING FAITH
SUSTAINING HOPE
...into the 21st Century
3 SPIRITUAL LIFE/SPIRITUAL HEALTH
I look upon the spiritual life of the soldier
as even more important than his physical
equipment... The soldier's heart, the soldier's
spirit, the soldier's soul are everything.
Unless the soldier's soul sustains him, he cannot
be relied upon and will fail himself and his
country in the end. - General George C.
Marshall, Chief of Staff, Army
The spiritual health of the Armed Forces is as
important as the physical health of its members
or the conditions of the equipment. General John
W. Vessey, Jr., Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff
4ARMY FAMILIES
"No single investment we make is more important
than our people...We will not continue to attract
quality young people if incentives and benefits
subside. We have to take care of the welfare of
our people in uniform, our civilians, and our
families, or we will not retain the career
professionals we will need to lead our forces
into the next century.- General John M.
Shalikashvili
"Army families are a key component of readiness.
As the Army deploys units more frequently, Army
families must be prepared to deal with the stress
and family decisions that deployment
brings.Source United States Army Posture
Statement
5--- THE TRUST FACTOR--
The tangible results of the Chaplaincy's work
with soldiers and their families are
self-evident in a United States Army survey of
soldiers, their families, and Department of the
Army Civilians published in August 1990. In the
survey section entitled "Getting Help, questions
were asked who those surveyed would consult with
"If you had a major family or personal problem."
The responses showed
Chaplains are assigned directly to units and
communities. We are not "on call." As chaplains
and soldiers (a unique dual-professional role),
we live in and are part of units and military
communities. We go where the Fort Gordon soldiers
go and experience their fears, joys, and grief.
We know the soldiers and their families.
