The New Emperor

• A long time ago an Emperor decided to select who
  would be emperor after him from all the children
  in his kingdom.

• The children all went to the palace to see if the
  Emperor would pick them.

• The Emperor gave all the children a seed.
• Take this seed, he told them. Plant it and
  look after it carefully. He told them to come
  back after one year and show him what had grown
  from each seed.

• A boy called Ling carefully planted the seed the
  Emperor had given him. He watered it, keep it in
  the sunlight, but made sure it was not too hot.
  He checked it every day.

• Nothing happened!
• Every day he checked it.
• Still nothing happened.
• After a year nothing had grown.
• He went back to the palace feeling stupid.
• He felt worse when he say what the other children
  had grown from their seeds.

• Ling was amazed at all the wonderful things that
  had grown for others. Some people looked at his
  pot of earth and laughed at him. The Emperor
  looked at all the plants. He stopped when he got
  to Ling.

• This boy will be the new Emperor. He is the only
  one who has followed my instructions. Before I
  gave you the seeds I had boiled them. They were
  dead seeds from which nothing would grow. Ling is
  the only one amongst you who is honest. He is
  also brave. He came here and stayed, even when he
  saw all the plants the others pretended had
  grown. He alone has the qualities of an emperor.

  old,He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and
  boldWith a shield on his arm and a lance in his
