Title: Introduction to Value Stream Mapping

Introduction to Value Stream Mapping

Agenda
  • What is value stream mapping
  • Why use value stream mapping
  • How to create a value stream map
  • From process maps to value stream maps

3
What is value stream mapping?
  • Visual representation of processes within a
    pathway
  • Allows you to see all the value-add and
    non-value-add (waste) activities
  • Opportunity to remove non-value-add steps and
    eliminate waste through problem solving
  • Move towards a future state

4
Why use value stream mapping?
  • Reduce and eliminate waste to
  • Improve safety and quality
  • Improve turnaround time
  • Increase capacity
  • Reduce staff frustrations

5
How to create a value stream map
  • Keep it high level - use approximately 6-8
    process steps
  • Focus on the high volume work i.e. 80 of the
work. This is called the Green Stream.
  • Collect true and accurate information by walking
    through the pathway yourself

Insert arrows between the boxes to show how the
information / items are flowing. Is it a push
or is it a pull?

STEP 6

Cycle time How many seconds/mins/hours does it
take to process ONE item?

Batch Size What is the size of each batch that
is handled in this stage of the process?

Defects What percentage is not right first time
and requires further work?
Insert the measurements - Gather real data to
really understand what is happening
Trigger What causes the process to start? i.e.
what triggers staff to start processing
referrals?

Add the length of time spent on the process
this is the same figure as the cycle time in your
data box

From Process Maps to Value Stream Maps
  • What does your current process map show?
  • Where do you need to collect more data in order
to create a current state value stream map?
  • What is your action plan to do this?
  • Aim to create a future state value stream map
    which minimises waste
