What is it?

• Elevated blood sugar levels
• Extended time with high blood sugar leads to
  complications
• Causes ketoacidosis an increased acidity of the
  blood

What Causes It?

• Non-diabetic patients
• Obesity
• Eating disorders

• Diabetic Patients
• Too little insulin
• Stress
• Illness
• Dehydration
• Decrease in activity

Blood Glucose Ranges
Non-Diabetic Patients Diabetics
Morning (fasting) 70-99 mg/dL 90-130 mg/dL
2-4 hrs after meals 70-140 mg/dL lt180 mg/dL
Hyperglycemia 200 or higher gt180 mg/dL

Symptoms

• Increased ketone levels in urine
• Increase in thirst
• Increase in urination
• Fatigue

Treatment

• Test blood glucose frequently
• Check urine for ketones
• Drink more water
• Exercise more
• Change eating habits
• Administer normal medications

Prevention

• Be wary of your diet
• Test blood glucose regularly if at risk
