5?Kungfu and Wushu .
- Kungfu, in western languages, normally
refers to Chinese martial art. In the Chinese
language the present official term for martial
art is wushu. However, due to various reasons,
one of the most important of which is that the
present Chinese government wishes to promote
wushu as a sport rather than a fighting art, the
term "wushu" when used in the West often connotes
a demonstrative form, whereas the term "kungfu"
suggests a combative art.
6? Northern and Southern Shaolin
- Northern Shaolin tend to adopt long wide sweeping
movement with emphasis on the legs. On the other
hand the Southern School have more emphasis on
the arms and low stance and tend to be more
agressive and efficient. Northern styles would
suit tall flexible people whereas southern styles
suit shorter larger peole with a generally low
centre of gravity.
7? The Birth of Shaolin
It is in the time of the Southern Northern
Dynasty that the first Shaolin Temple was built
in the year 497 AD. Thus we celebrate the 1500
birthday of Shaolin in 1997.
8The Birth of Kung Fu
- About scholar and a monk Da Mo.
- It was due to Shaolin Monks lack of fitness and
health. - Da Mo devised, the now legendary, 18 Hands of
Lohan.
9The Golden Area of Shaolin
The time of the Ming Dynasty was a golden area in
Chinas history. Many works of art were created
that still exist and are now priceless. This is
also the time when the original 170 movements
were redevelopment into the 5 Animal Style (Hung
Kuen) Kung Fu. At Shaolin's peak there were many
lesser and greater temples in China.
10The Invaders
- The invaders from Manchurian, lead by the Ching
Family, ended Chinas Golden area, and the Ming
Dynasties reign. They slowly but surly and
brutally took control of China and systematically
eradicated all resistance. Many Chinese nobles,
warriors and commoners were forced underground.
There they tried to make invaders leave. The
Manchu slaughtered all who did not conform. Those
that did not wish to conform had to either
migrate or go underground, some also sough refuge
in the Shaolin temples.
11The 5 main temples were
- 1.Honan temple
- 2.Fukien temple
- 3.Omei Shan temple
- 4.Kwangtung temple
- 5.Wutang Mountain temple.
