• Studied chemistry in France and the United States
• Invented Dynamite in 1866

• The invention of Dynamite led to his fortune
• Invented lots of things held 355 patents
• Supported international peace movements

• When he died he left his fortune to develop a
  prize that would encourage scientific progress
  thereby improving human condition
