The History of Basketball
  • Basketball was introduced in 1891 by Dr. James A.
    Naismith.
  • The intention of developing basketball was to
create an interest for sports in the gymnasium

The Objective of basketball
  • The object of the game is to pass, throw, bounce,
hand, or otherwise move the basketball among the
players on your team with the intent of scoring a
basket and preventing the other team from
    scoring.
  • Two points are awarded for each basket from the
floor and one point for each free throw.
  • Three points are given for baskets made outside
    the three point line.

6
Rules of the Game
  • The basketball that is used should measure 30
circumference for men and 29 circumference for
    women.
  • A coin toss determines choice of ends of each
    side
  • The teams change sides at half time
  • The game must be started by a jump ball
  • A player is out of bounds if they touch the floor
    outside of the boundary lines

7
Fouls
  • A foul is an offensive made to another player
that allows that player to be given a free throw
two free throws, or to be given the ball out of
    bounds.
  • Some of these include
  • Charging
  • Blocking
  • Pushing
  • Holding
  • Tripping
  • Hacking or kneeing

8
Duration of Game
  • In high school, teams play four quarters of 8
minutes each. A 10 minute half time is given for
each game as well as one minute breaks between
    each quarters.
  • If the score is tied at the end of the fourth
quarter, as many 3 minute periods are given until
    the tie score is broken.

Fundamentals of the Game
  • Passing and Catching
  • When a ball is thrown to you, spread your fingers
    and keep arms relaxed.
  • To pass the ball, place your hands on each side
of the ball so that you can get it away quickly
and push away from the body.
  • The three passes that we will be learning in
class are the chest pass, the bounce pass, and
    the overhead pass.

11
Chest Pass
  • 1. Hold the ball with both hands, elbows close to
the body, fingers spread with the thumbs pointing
    inwards.
  • 2. Step toward the goal and whip the ball with a
strong wrist snap and push with the thumbs of
    your fingers
  • 3. Follow through in the direction of the pass.

12
Bounce Pass
  • 1. hold the ball just like you would with the
chest pass but lower at about waist height.
  • 2. Push the ball out and down with enough force
that the ball is able to bounce to the teammate.
  • This should only be used for short passes.

13
Overhead Pass
  • The ball with be thrown with two hands.
  • The ball should be brought above and slightly
beings the head with both hands and released with
a strong wrist snap and extensions of the arms
  • Arms and hands need to follow through in the
    direction of the pass.

14
Dribbling
  • Dribbling is so vital to the game of basketball.
  • Lets watch video by Bill Walton former NBA VIP on
    the fundamentals of dribbling.
  • http//www.sportskool.com/videos/dribbling-basics

15
Shooting
  • Shooting is also a very important aspect of the
    game.
  • The non shooting hand should placed on the left
    hand of the ball.
  • The wrist should be cocked with the ball resting
on the fingers and not touching the inside palms
    of the hand.
  • The elbow should be inline with the target and
square out with the lift right before the release
    of the ball.
  • The ball will roll off the fingers while the
    wrist remains coiled.
  • Throughout the entire shot, eyes should stay
    focused on the target

Jump Shot
  • The jump shot is the most common kind of shot in
    the game of basketball.
  • It is usually a shot that precedes a dribble.
  • When dribbling, come to a stop and execute a
    controlled jump.
  • Bring the ball overhead, with the shooting hand
behind the elbow of the shooting arm under the
ball and the other hand in front.
  • At the beak of the jump, release the ball and
follow through with extension of the right
    forearm.

    referee signals with one another.
  • After about 5 minutes, quiz your partner by
saying a call and seeing if your partner is able
    to remember the signal!

19

demonstrates competency in terms, dimensions, and
    rules.
