3Background
- The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony
during the 16th century -
- they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the
Spanish-American War. -
- In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing
commonwealth. -
- In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese
occupation during WWII, and US forces and
Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to
regain control. -
- On 4 July 1946 the Republic of the Philippines
attained its independence. -
- The Philippine Government faces threats from
three terrorist groups on the US Government's
Foreign Terrorist Organization list, but in 2006
and 2007 scored some major successes in capturing
or killing key wanted terrorists. -
- Decades of Muslim insurgency in the southern
Philippines have led to a peace accord with one
group and an ongoing cease-fire and peace talks
with another.

- the white triangle stands for equality and

first eight provinces who sought independence
from Spain and were placed under martial law by

Revolution in 1896. - The three stars represent the three major

10Culture - Bayanihan
- Bayanihan is a Filipino term taken from the word
bayan, referring to a nation, town or community.
The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of
togetherness. - The origin of the term bayanihan can be traced
from a common tradition in Philippine towns where
community members volunteer to help a family move
to a new place. The process involves literally
carrying the house to its new location.

American system, - with English as the medium of instruction.

- The Banaue Rice Terraces are 2000-year old
terraces that were carved into the mountains of
Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the
Batad indigenous people.
- Chocolate hills - an unusual geological formation
in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around
1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the
same size, spread over an area of more than
50 square kilometres. They are covered in green
grass that turns brown during the dry season,
hence the name.
