  • The origin of the term bayanihan can be traced
from a common tradition in Philippine towns where
community members volunteer to help a family move
to a new place. The process involves literally
carrying the house to its new location.

Economy
  • The Philippine economy grew at its fastest pace
in three decades with real GDP growth exceeding
    7 in 2007.
  • Higher government spending contributed to the
growth, but a resilient service sector and large
remittances from the millions of Filipinos who
work abroad have played an increasingly important
    role.
  • Economic growth has averaged 5 since President
    MACAPAGAL-ARROYO took office in 2001.
  • Nevertheless, the Philippines will need still
higher, sustained growth to make progress in
alleviating poverty, given its high population
growth and unequal distribution of income.

3G Technology
  • 3G literally means 3rd Generation. It is a
generic term for the next generation of mobile
    phone communications systems.
  • UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications
Systems) is the specific 3G system chosen as the
path of the worldwide GSM community for 3G
evolution. It is based on a GSM network enhanced
with W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiplex
    Access).
  • Aside from enhancing the existing GSM network, 3G
supports the effective transmission of multimedia
service. With 3G, you can now enjoy video
calling, high-speed video streaming and mobile
Internet six times faster than the current GSM/
    GPRS networks.
  • Smart started its preparations for a seamless
transition to 3G as early as late 2000. On
February 14, 2006, Smart launched its 3G service
on a free trial basis, making the company the
first telco in the Philippines to offer 3G
    services to the public.

26
Smart 3G Milestones
  • Smart is the first to bring you state-of-the-art
3G - from Live Video Streaming to Broadband
Internet to HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet
    Access).
  • On February 14, 2006, Smart launched on a
free-trial basis what has been dubbed as the
next big thing to happen in the Philippine
    wireless industry.
  • The launch was highlighted by a 3G video call
from Barcelona, Spain by Smart network services
division head Rolando G. Peña to an audience
composed of members of the press and Smart
    personnel.
  • Smart became the first telco in the Philippines
to offer 3G services to the public.

27
Its a story of firsts.
  • First in Schools.
  • Smart 3G debuted in major colleges and
universities in the Philippines with Ateneo de
Manila and De La Salle universities hosting demos
    on their campuses.
  • First in public service involvements.
  • In June 2006, Smart 3G enabled the mobile viewing
of selected traffic zones and vacation spots
nationwide to smoothen the travel plans of
motorists during the Holy Week. Using Smart 3G,
motorists were able to use their 3G-capable
phones to access traffic video and avoid
    bottlenecks.
  • During the May 14, 2007 elections, Smart 3G was
also deployed during the coverage of GMA 7 of
    election hotspots nationwide.
  • First to offer a digital life solution via the
    Mobile Eye.
  • The Mobile Eye functions as a security camera to
closely monitor your household, businesses, and
everything else they value most via a video call
    using their 3G mobile phones.

28
Smart 3G Features
  • Video calling. Real-time video on screen of the
    person youre calling.
  • Video mail. Enrich video calling via video mail,
which lets 3G subscribers deposit and retrieve a
    recorded video message.
  • Video streaming. Watch videos directly from the
    Internet real-time.
  • Mobile Eye. The Mobile Eye is a device that can
be remotely accessed and controlled via a video
call through a 3G-enabled Smart mobile phone.
  • High-speed mobile Internet access. Surf the web
at broadband speeds right on your mobile phone
  • Mobile videoke. Subscribers may select and
download a videoke track from the Smart WAP site,
save it in their phone and play it anytime.
  • Video and audio download of selected 3G contents.
Download your favorite clips and musicthis time
    faster.
  • Find-a-Friend via C Me. A social networking
service where 3G subscribers can meet new friends
and chat with other users via video messaging.

Help the traffic situation in Metro Manila
  • How about a Partnership between Smart
    Telecommunications SMART Park?
  • (for those who were not here during my Midterm
presentation, SMART Park is a Parking Reservation
System that allows motorist to secure a parking
    space ahead of time. )
  • Note The identical names is due to coincidence.
Smart Telecommunications, Inc. is a wireless
services provider while SMART Park is a parking
    reservation services.

32
The End
  • Smart 3G allows motorists to use their 3G-capable
phones to access traffic video and avoid
    bottlenecks.
  • SMART Park allows motorist to secure a parking
    space ahead of time.
  • There are still many variables to be considered
but the possibility of a Partnership can only
help lessen traffic in Metro Manila.

33
Bonus Natural Wonders, Philippines
  • The Banaue Rice Terraces are 2000-year old
terraces that were carved into the mountains of
Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the
    Batad indigenous people.
  • Chocolate hills - an unusual geological formation
in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around
1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills of about the
same size, spread over an area of more than
50 square kilometres. They are covered in green
grass that turns brown during the dry season,
    hence the name.
