3SUMMARY
- In order to provide extra support in non
conventional well control situations, ADCO has
decided to form Well Control Expert Team or WCET - Main criteria to formulate such team is to
- Select drilling personnel with good experience in
drilling engineering - Understand well control methods
4SUMMARY
- To this end, Drilling Division has requested an
advanced well control course to enhance the
competency of the team - Several proposals were received from various
training providers available in the market - Two courses were run in January and March 2003
and will be discussed in the following slides
5WCET OBJECTIVES
- The main objectives of the Well Control Expert
Team are as follows
- Ensure that the team is familiar with all
available well control methods and scenarios - Ability to intervene whenever needed for well
control incidents - Ability to evaluate and analyze any well control
situation - Identify the potential problems along with the
most effective way to bring the well under
control - Demonstrate learning curve and lesson learned

11 CASE STUDY
- Due to several well control incidents, that
occurred in ADCOs fields. Well Control Expert
Team concept was suggested - The team is responsible for the intervention and
control of the said wells whenever an incident
occurs - The team should have enough drilling experience
to conduct the necessary analysis - The analysis requires more advance courses in
well control so that all issues are covered
12 CASE STUDY
- Advanced Well Control Course proved to be the
best solution - He decision was taken t contact all available
training providers. Proposals were received from
the following - Aberdeen Drilling School (via BP)
- Randy Smith
- GSM
- Wild well Control
- Boots and Coots
13 CASE STUDY
- ENSPM PetroSkills were not directly contacted
but the information was obtained via their course
catalogue (by the author of this presentation) - Members of ADCO Drilling Division have visited
Shell Training Center in the Hague - One of the observations noted that Shell provides
an Advanced Well Control Course. The practical
application is contacted using a real life well
in the North West of Holland
14 CASE STUDY
- Based on this, a request was made to Shell to run
the said course in their Training Center - To run the said course, Shell has requested that
a minimum of 8 candidates has to attend. This
request was difficult to fulfill at that time due
to the individuals work pressure - Since there was no other training provider than
Shell who uses real life well. ADCO has decided
to run the anyway and COMPANY B was the candidate
15 CASE STUDY
- Course Overview
- 5-Day duration consisting of the following
- Well control basics
- Kick prevention, detection prediction
techniques - Pressure limits on casing kick tolerance
- Well control methods
- Handling gas in the wellbore
- Recognizing problems during well control
- Student hands-on (simulator practice)
- Stripping
- Well intervention
- Well control equipment
16 CASE STUDY
- Underbalanced drilling
- Student hands-on (simulator practice)
- Extendedreach horizontal well control
- HPHT well control consideration
- Case studies
- Slimhole well control consideration
- Student hands-on (simulator practice)
- Final exercise on simulator
17 CASE STUDY
- Dual Course Evaluation
- Course objectives achieved
18 CASE STUDY
- Dual Course Evaluation
- Improved job performance
19 CONCLUSION
- Considering the importance of formulating WCET,
following the concluding remarks
- Ensure that course objectives are covered by the
training providers - List course content that serve ADCO needs
- Ensure the course is divided into
- Refreshment sessions (to fill the gap)
- Advanced theoretical session
20 CONCLUSION
- Case studies related to advanced well control
- Advanced Simulator sessions
- End of course exam covering objectives
- Possibility to run the course on a real life well
is highly recommended to enhance individuals
skills
