Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • All living creatures do best within a certain
    range of factors
  • Homeostasis (internal balance) can be affected by
things inside the body- remember fever and
    vomit???
  • But homeostasis can also be affected by things
outside the body heat, cold, lack of food/water,
    amount of sunlight, etc.

5
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Shivering
  • What happens to you when you get too cold?
  • Why do you think this occurs?
  • Shivering causes muscles to contract/work.
Working muscles release heat which helps to
maintain a stable body temperature- approximately
    98.6o F
  • Shivering also fluffs up your fur helping to
trap heat and further insulate the body.

6
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sweating
  • What happens to you when you get too hot?
  • Why do you think this occurs?
  • Blood rushes to the skin surface to dissipate
heat from inside the body (you turn red or get
    flushed).
  • Sweat is excreted onto the skins surface.
Evaporation of the sweat cools the body and
lowers your temperature to a more normal level.

7
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sweating
  • What about creatures who cannot sweat (like
    dogs)?
  • What about cold-blooded creatures? How do they
    deal w/hot and cold temperatures?
  • Human skin- sweating video clip

8
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sleep
  • Some creatures have evolved adaptations to their
environment that involve different type of sleep
  • Torpor- deep sleep
  • Estivation- sleeping through heat
  • Hibernation- sleeping through cold

9
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sleep
  • Torpor- deep sleep
  • During torpor an animals body temperature drops,
    and its heartbeat slows
  • This is a very deep sleep, but it may only last
for minutes or hours. This is NOT hibernation.
  • Many smaller animals go into torpor to preserve
their energy- bats during the day, hummingbirds
    at night
  • Torpor is a dangerous state for these animals

10
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sleep
  • Estivation- sleeping through heat
  • Animals who live in hot, dry climates may
estivate to protect themselves from the heat and
    lack of water/food
  • Estivating animals do not eat, move or grow while
    asleep
  • Their body temperature, heart rate, and
    metabolism drop
  • Most estivate underground to hide from predators
    and heat
  • Examples bees, frogs, snails, lizards, some
    turtles

11
Homeostasis- External Stimuli
  • Sleep
  • Hibernation- sleeping through cold
  • Not like our sleep animals appear almost dead
they cannot quickly wake-up, protect themselves,
    or even move/walk
  • Animals prepare for hibernation by packing on
extra body fat in the fall they live off that
    fat throughout their hibernation period
  • Examples skunks, opossums, badgers, bears

12
IGNITE! Learning
  • Unit 10 Topics 78

Homeostasis assessment computer-lab work
  • Every student will be assigned one physical
condition to research in the computer lab
  • You will make a power point for your condition.
You will need to make a slide for each of the
    following
  • Name of the condition.
  • What is (condition)?
  • What causes (condition)?
  • What are the symptoms of (condition)?
  • What treatments are available for (condition)?
  • How is (condition) prevented?
  • List some statistics of (condition).
  • Resources Cited

29
Conditions to Research
  • Overeating
  • Common Cold
  • Cholera
  • Ear infection
  • Migraine
  • Meningitis
  • Flu
  • Measles
  • Tuberculosis
  • Chicken Pox
