• Born on November 30, 1667 in Dublin
• The son of Protestant

• In 1673 began his education at Kilkenny Grammar
  School
• graduated from Trinity College
• In 1689, he became secretary for Sir William
  Temple
• There Swift also was the teacher of a young girl,
  Esther Johnson

• In 1704 he wrote two satirical pieces Tale of
  the Tub and Battle of the Books
• In 1710 Swift tried to open a political career
  among Whigs but changed his party
• When the Tories lost political power Swift
  withdrew to Ireland where he served as Dean of
  St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin

• Suffered from multiple diseases and from deafness
• In 1738 he slipped gradually into senility, and
  suffered a stroke
• Died on October 19, 1745

• In part one, Gulliver is wrecked on an island
  where human beings are six inches tall
• Gulliver's second voyage takes him to Brobdingnag
  where he meets giants

• In the third voyage Gulliver travels to the
  flying island of Laputa and the nearby continent
  and capital of Lagado
• He also travels the the island of Glubbdubdrib
  and visits the Luggnaggians and the Struldbrugs

  Houyhnhnms, where horses are intelligent but
  human beings are not.
• Gulliver's Travels was social satire in which
  Swift wanted to show the consequences of
  humanity's refusal to be reasonable
