Title: FACTORS AFFECTING POPULATION GROWTH

1
FACTORS AFFECTING POPULATION GROWTH
  • CGC1D Canadian Geography

2
Brainstorm Population Growth
  • What factors might cause a population to grow?
  • What factors might cause a population to decline?

3
Brainstorm Population Growth
  • Is this something we should be concerned about?
  • How will a growing population impact the world?
    (e.g. resources)

4
Introduction Clip
  • The worlds population hit 7 billion October 31,
    2011!
  • 7 Billion, National Geographic Magazine

POOR ECONOMIC TIMES
  • In developed nations, when there are times of
high unemployment and scarcity of money, people
tend to have few children due to increased costs
  • eg. During the Great Depression, there was
massive unemployment and poverty resulting in
    people having fewer children.

6
GOOD ECONOMIC TIMES
  • In certain circumstances, new found prosperity
can encourage couples to have children
  • e.g. in the years that followed WWII (1946-1964)
many couples found that they could afford more
children with higher salaries and government
benefits, resulting in a baby boom.

7
WAR
  • War reduces the population by limiting the number
of births that can occur because males (and
increasingly females) are away at war.
  • War kills many soldiers and/or civilians.
  • In both WWI and WWII, Canadas population was
reduced by fewer births and losses of soldiers.

8
MIGRATION
  • Immigration adds people to a countrys
    population.
  • Emigration results in a loss of population.
  • Depending on the country you live in, you may be
a receiver / loser of population through
migration. (More information to follow in the
    next chapter)

9
LITERACY / WEALTH / EDUCATION / HEALTHCARE
  • Literate people are better able to understand
birth control in order to make it effective.
  • Literate people are more likely to go to college
    or university, delaying marriage.

10
LITERACY / WEALTH / EDUCATION / HEALTHCARE
  • Literate people are more likely to make more
money and can afford better health care more
babies are likely to survive and therefore
couples are likely to have fewer children in
addition to increasing lifespan and eliminating
    many diseases.

11
EPIDEMICS / PANDEMICS
  • Widespread occurrences of diseases in a community
(Epidemics) or around the world (pandemics) that
kill thousands or millions of people eg AIDS is
a serious pandemic that kills millions worldwide
    each year.
