Monroe Doctrine of 1823
  • "the American continents, by the free and
    independent condition which they have assumed and
    maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as
    subjects for future colonization by any European
    powers.
  • In summary asked European countries not to
    increase their influence or recolonize any part
    of the Western Hemisphere

Economic Imperialism
  • Central govts would allow foreign capital in

    central govt to improve armies, navies and to
    suppress internal rebellions.

    helped cure diseases
  • Platt Amendment Gave the US the right to
    intervene in Cuban affairs if the Cuban govt was
